A family photo session can mean a lot of things and be photographed a lot of different ways. When I hear Mountain Bike Kingston and family photos in the same sentence, I just know good things will come of it! Outdoor family photos are right in my wheelhouse and doing them at one of my favourite places in the city is always a treat. Usually when I shoot at MTBK bikes are involved (obvi) but the first thing Monica said to me when they were booking the session was that there would be no bikes involved! Whaaaa? Well you see, they are a very active family and they are wearing helmets in all the photos they have of themselves! OK fair enough, that makes sense! These are my people and I’m so glad they found me to do this fun session.
So, what to do at a mountain bike park without bikes? While I will always incorporate some classic shots with everyone looking at the camera, a big part of what I do is incorporate activity and play, especially when photographing families with young kids. So play we did! The boys enjoyed running and and jumping off bridges in the skills park and getting their jeans dirty, despite Mum’s better wishes. Oh yeah, and we were blessed with some gorgeous light and a warm autumn evening which only made things better.
What I love most about this session is that it’s really true to them and who they are even though they weren’t riding bikes. The context of shooting at the mountain bike farm is genuine to them and the play that ensued did too. So, what’s your thing? What’s your place? That’s the first question when we set up your family shoot. Let’s go!
